Keywest Workshop

workshop

This workshop introduces students to the fundamentals of coding through live music-making. Students will explore how musical ideas—rhythm, pattern, structure, and sound—can be translated into forms that a computer can understand. By working with simple, foundational coding concepts, students will learn how code works at a basic level and how it can be used as a creative tool.

Using accessible, browser-based software, students will write code in real time to generate beats, songs, and dance music. Along the way, they’ll see how small changes in code can produce new sounds, new patterns, and new musical possibilities. The focus is not on technical mastery, but on experimentation, play, and understanding how music and computation intersect.

The program emphasizes the idea of coding as an instrument: even a small amount of knowledge can open up powerful creative potential. Through hands-on exploration, students will gain insight into programming, computer science, and engineering while making and sharing music together.

Laptops and headphones will be provided during the workshop, and no software downloads are required. The session will include informal mini-performances, and participants may even play music together as a group. The workshop is designed for a small group setting (approximately 6–10 participants), allowing for discussion, collaboration, and individualized guidance.
